BETTER IS ONE DAY WITH YOU

As morning light slipped through my thin curtains and announced the arrival of another day, my first thought was to spend time with my heavenly Father. As I reflected on the busyness of the week behind me, I realized I had not lingered in His presence as much as my soul needed. Guilt, that familiar visitor, tried to take its place beside me, but this time I refused its invitation. Instead, I reached for my Bible, bowed my head, and thanked the Father who had carried me through an overwhelming week. He had watched over every responsibility, strengthened me for every task, and sustained me through the unexpected.

After thanking Him for His faithful presence, I asked Him to speak. I wanted to hear His voice again and offer Him the time I had too easily allowed to be consumed by lesser things. Refusing to let the failures of the past week keep me from drawing near, I opened my Bible and continued reading through the Psalms. In answer to my prayer, I came to Psalm 84, one of my favourite passages. The opening verses reminded me that the presence of God is not a place to fear but a home to desire. We are invited to come near, to dwell with Him, and to build a relationship rooted in love, trust, and longing.

During my high school years, I cherished a song based on this Psalm. I would sing it with tears streaming down my face, knowing that only in God’s presence could I find the peace, love, and understanding my heart was searching for. Even then, I longed for a relationship with Him that placed my entire life in His hands. I would rather stand at the threshold of His house than find comfort among voices that gossiped, wounded, dismissed others, or encouraged me to do the same. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in a mansion built on dishonesty.

As I read Psalm 84 again, those memories returned with tenderness. I realized that the relationship I once longed for had truly taken root. The God I met twelve years ago is the same God who remains faithful today. He has been my sun and shield. He has bestowed favour and honour. He has withheld no good thing as I have sought to walk uprightly before Him. And even when I stumble, I continue to rise, because each fall has taught me to depend more deeply on His grace and strength.

There are seasons when God seems silent, but I am learning that His silence is not absence. Sometimes He is teaching me to trust Him beyond what I can see, beyond what I can understand, and beyond the timing I would choose for myself. What I desire may not come when I expect it, but His timetable is wiser than mine. Waiting can be difficult, and trust does not always come easily, but we are called to remain before Him with expectant hearts. Do not give up on trusting Him. Long for Him. Sit at the door of His presence and acknowledge that every good thing is found in His strength, not your own. Truly, better is one day in His courts than a thousand elsewhere.
